BLESSINGS COME TO THE UNWORTHY
I’m reminded of a quote from the late great Bishop Fulton J. Sheen. “Because God is just I believe there is a hell. Because God is merciful I believe there is no one in it.” The notion that we are here to pass a test in order to merit an eternal reward and avoid the flames of hell has historically carried much currency in most Christian traditions. This assumption leaves us struggling with the conjecture as to who is saved and who isn’t… what loop holes can we theologically devise to rescue those unbaptized babies or the less well informed among us who fail to meet the requirements that our particular version of Christianity sites as obligatory for salvation. Perhaps “worthiness” has nothing to do with it. This song my be sung for the congregation or with them after a “play-through” introduction.
